The Kibera Penda Project

The Kibera Penda Project

Taking love to Africa's largest slum...

Kibera is the largest slum in Africa. With a population of over 1.2 million people, all living in less than a square mile. Located in the middle of Nairobi Kenya, these people are considered squatters. They are unable to receive a decent education, therefore unable to get a job. This makes providing for the basic needs of their families nearly impossible. The sick cycle of poverty  is holding these people hostage. and is claiming more victims everyday. The population of Kibera slum has doubled in the last 5 years.

Penda is Swahili for LOVE.

The Project is to take love to Kibera slum. Our desire is to see the next generation of Kiberans break free from this poverty cycle. We believe the only way to end this cycle is to meet the needs of the people in Kibera. All of the needs; whether it be physical, spiritual, or emotional.

New Hope Scholarship Fund

The Kibera Penda Project desires to see an end to the poverty cycle in Kibera. We feel the best way to make this dream a reality is to invest in the education of the next generation of Kiberans. A typical education in Kibera lasts through 8th grade, at which point tuition fees drastically rise. Most teenagers are unable to continue past 8th grade, therefore drop out before reaching high school. As a result these students have no chance at securing a job, and the cycle of poverty continues on another generation.

In 2009, the New Hope Scholarship Fund was set up to give our primary school students a chance to continue their education. Our first year saw 14 students start high school and another 2 begin college. In 2010 we are estimating another 20-30 students who will qualify to continue their education in high school.

Our hope is to find sponsors for each of our scholarship students. However, we do not plan on a purely financial investment, instead we want our students to build relationships with their partners.

Krafts for Kibera

handcrafted for you...

Krafts for Kibera gives Kiberan students a personal opportunity to help their school and classmates. When these handmade crafts are sold, 100% of the profits go to the New Hope Primary School Fund. This fund provides basic needs and supplies for the New Hope Primary School, as well as tuition assistance for families who are unable to pay school fees.

In the summer of 2009, all 400 students at New Hope Primary made a craft to be sold in America. We came back with paintings, coasters, keychains, necklaces, and even sock creature dolls. But even better, 400 personal amazing stories of slum children hoping for a better future.

The amazing thing was the kids got so much joy out of making the crafts, and so much hope out of knowing that they were going to be sold to help their education.

There are many ways to get involved. You can buy crafts online or by attending an event where Krafts for Kibera are sold. There is also a great opportunity for individuals or groups to commit to selling crafts at their school, church, concert, etc. If you would like more information on how to get involved with Krafts for Kibera please email KiberaPendaProject@gmail.com.

Project Biashara

Partnering with Kenyan Women for a Better Future

In the summer of 2009, a few American visitors to Kibera saw a huge need for women to use their skills and gifts to better themselves and the lives of their children. Project Biashara was born with the goal to assist Kiberan women through small business loans. Through an interview process, an initial group of women were selected based on their skills and trade interests, including jewelry making, gardening, tailoring, and hair styling. Currently, training is underway to enhance their leadership skills and provide access to resources critical to launching these various business ventures. The overarching goal of this project is to adequately equip women and empower them to eventually own and operate their own sustainable businesses.

Medical Clinic

Dream for a clinic

Land has been purchased for New Hope Bible Baptist to build a new church building that will accommodate more people. This is also open up the old church building for more classrooms which are desperately needed at New Hope Primary School.

However, there is more land purchased than needed for just the church building and with our holistic approach and medical treatment needs we have a LARGE dream of building a clinic on this land and hiring a full-time Kenyan medical staff.

Statistics say that two-thirds of people living in Kibera have HIV. Most doctors think it’s higher than that. Daily, people die of diarrhea that could be solved by access to Pepto-Bismol. Recently, a couple nursing students did a survey on the students at New Hope Primary School. They heard complaint after complaint about eyes hurting because these children could never receive access to glasses or contacts or even an eye exam.

A few teams have come in and done day clinics and health training. But what do you do when a child is diagnosed with malaria or hepatitis but has no medicine? Or receives medicine but then runs out?

This community needs this dream to become a reality. If you feel a desire to help meet their needs, contact KiberaPendaProject@gmail.com.
